Arsenal Wins CanAms

The Penn Hills based hockey club, Arsenal, was vindicated by an impressive tournament win at the 2015 CanAms presented by the Leominster Dek Hockey Center. This is the first win by a Pittsburgh club at the Leominster rink in the Mens competitive division. “CanAms” is an Open tournament, or ‘A’ league, which hosts both Canadian and American teams. Leominster Dek Hockey Center, the “Home of Dek Hockey”, is considered to be one of a select few locations that host annual tournaments at a premiere level for American and Canadian clubs.

Over the past few decades, many accomplished Pittsburgh based teams have participated in CanAms only to come away empty handed. GPDC, United, and Bad Co to only name a few. Prior to the tournament, BallHockey.com released their ranking of the top 25 teams in North America with Arsenal ranked at #23. We anticipate a solid jump in their standing next year due to Arsenal’s memorable win over the weekend.

Arsenal defeated last years CanAms champions, the Boston Saints. The Saints are an impressive, well balanced team and currently ranked #13 in North America. Congratulations to Arsenal and to Warren Morgano (MVP) and Joe Sheehan (MVG) for winning outstanding player awards!

AIT Kings

AIT Hosts Novice Tryouts

The AIT Kings have enjoyed tremendous success in tournaments this 2015 season. Emboldened, and in an effort to expand their program, the As Is Tradition Hockey Club (AIT) hosted an open try-out on October 24 at their home rink, Hot Shots Arena, in Mt Pleasant. The camp was designed to identify potential players for a new team called the AIT Vipers. Future endeavors will see the Vipers compete in novice level tournaments.

Team USA Mens and Pittsburgh Gods coach, Cory Herschk, was recruited and directly involved with the event. Our sport is a heavily emotionally based one and is of an ‘amateur’ status and pay-to-play game. Over the course of 30 years, this author has witnessed first hand the varying degrees of success and failure of teams at all competitive levels. This is an example of an intangible challenge faced when building rosters for tournaments. Thus, it is highly commendable that AIT has gone outside the circles of familiarity and sought the impartial involvement of Coach Herschk.

2015 Street Hockey USA Nationals Summary

Rec A – Don’t let the designation fool you.  Blitzkrieg played the Jr. Gods to a 4-2 win achieving its first Street Hockey USA Nationals title. In my humble opinion and experience, this tournament had more of a C feel to it.  Then again I’m getting older.  Case in point, Blitz average age was calculated to be a whopping ~34 whereas their opponent in the finals was probably around 17-18.  Not too shabby for a team that claimed four 40+ players.  Congrats to Blitzkrieg’s Jason Dick and Jr. Gods’ Ryan Watts for earning outstanding player awards.  Jason passed that trophy to Larry ‘Legends’ Piazzi for his GW goal in the finals and powerful grinding play during the tournament.  This speaks volumes about the official MVP.

Rec B – Congratulations to our friends over at AIT Hockey Club for their win over the Buffalo Cobras.  They played a tough team in the finals.  The Cobras had their hands full in the semi finals game against a tough Raleigh Thunder.  I watched a few Rec B games and noted lots of fierce play and good hockey.  AIT earned a tough win in a competitive field.  Outstanding players included John Tokosh, AIT Kings and Matt Nickle of the Cobras.

Coed – Dekhounds played Blitzkrieg White to a 5-1 final.  The first Dekhounds win of the Street Hockey Nationals designation.  Shaun Sisson received an Outstanding Player award for Dekhounds.  Special congrats to Missy Stawartz for her Outstanding Player award in yet another MVD performance.  Missy makes a strong case for this rare award each and every tournament.
